AI Overviews: France Flipped From 0% to 92% in 60 Days

France went from 0% to 92% AI Overviews in 60 days. Fresh data on 2,000 queries, who Google cites, and why 50.6% of cited domains are not in the top 10.

AI Overviews: France Flipped From 0% to 92% in 60 Days

TL;DR: in June 2026, our first barometer measured 0% AI Overviews in France. On August 4, 2026, we re-ran the exact same 200 French queries: 92.0% now show an AI Overview (184 gained, 0 lost). Featured snippets collapsed from 70.5% to 0.5% in the same window. The last major AI Overviews holdout flipped in about 60 days. And across our full 2,000-query sample, 50.6% of the domains cited by US AI Overviews are absent from the organic top 10 (43.8% in France): ranking is no longer the entry ticket to visibility.

In June, France was the outlier: the one large Western market where Google's AI Overviews were essentially absent. That made it a natural experiment. What happens when the switch is flipped on a whole country at once? The answer arrived over the summer. Here is edition 2 of our AI Overviews barometer, expanded to 2,000 queries (1,000 France, 1,000 US), with an exact query-by-query differential against June.

What we measured

  • 2,000 real queries: 1,000 on Google France (desktop, French) and 1,000 on Google US (desktop, English).
  • 10 sectors: health, finance, SEO/marketing, e-commerce, legal, real estate, travel, tech, B2B SaaS and local.
  • The 296 queries from the June barometer re-run identically (200 FR, 96 US) to measure the change query by query.
  • For each query: AI Overview presence, cited sources, featured snippet, People Also Ask, local pack, video, forums, and the organic top 10.
  • Collected on August 4, 2026 via the DataForSEO API (Google SERP, desktop, depth 10).

The headline: 0% in June, 92% in August

On the 200 French queries from June, re-run identically on August 4:

Metric (200 tracked FR queries)June 2026August 2026
Queries with an AI Overview0.0%92.0%
Queries with a featured snippet70.5%0.5%
People Also Ask (average per SERP)0.990.99

The detail is even starker: 184 queries gained an AI Overview and not a single one lost it. This was not a gradual test or a partial rollout. It was a single, massive wave, completed in roughly 60 days.

Second lesson: featured snippets are dead in France. They covered 70.5% of our tracked queries in June. They now cover 0.5%. The AI Overview did not stack on top of the existing direct answer, it replaced it. Zero-click search simply changed engines.

The US kept moving too: on the 96 tracked US queries, AI Overview coverage rose from 89.6% to 94.8%.

Why the French flip matters globally

France was the last big control group. Its 60-day flip tells every market three things:

  1. Rollouts are now binary, not gradual. When Google decides a market is ready, coverage goes from zero to near-total in weeks. There is no multi-quarter adaptation period.
  2. Featured snippets do not coexist with AI Overviews. They get absorbed. Any strategy still optimizing for position zero is optimizing for a placement that can vanish in one wave.
  3. The citation patterns converge. Post-flip France immediately looks like the US: same dominance of video, same weight of authority sources, same share of citations coming from outside the top 10.

People Also Ask (average per SERP)0.980.94
Local pack9.0%9.7%
Video block46.1%49.3%
Discussions and forums block0.0%30.4%

France has essentially caught up: 83.0% versus 86.6%. The June gap (0% versus 89.6%) closed in one summer.

One structural difference remains: the "discussions and forums" block appears on 30.4% of US SERPs (Reddit is heavily surfaced) and on 0% of French SERPs. The US SERP has a community layer; the French SERP does not.

Two readings:

  1. No editorial sector is spared, including the sensitive ones (health, legal, finance) where Google was historically cautious. Health actually tops both markets at 97%.
  2. Local queries are the last refuge: 13% in France, 16% in the US. On local intent, Google still favors the local pack and classic results.

By intent and query length

Intent (France)QueriesAI Overview
Informational45093.8%
Transactional46887.0%
Local641.6%
Navigational180.0%

The most consequential line: transactional queries trigger an AI Overview 87.0% of the time in France (92.3% in the US). This is not confined to trivia questions; commercial-intent queries are covered too.

Query length matters as well: long-tail queries trigger an AI Overview in 91.7% of cases in France (96.6% in the US), versus 77.3% for short queries (78.7% US). The more precise the question, the more Google answers it itself.

Who gets cited? 50.6% of sources are not in the top 10

This is the heaviest statistic of this edition. We cross-checked every domain cited by an AI Overview against the organic top 10 of the same query:

Citations vs organic top 10FranceUnited States
Domains cited by AI Overviews6,0976,527
Cited but absent from the top 102,6733,301
Share of citations outside the top 1043.8%50.6%
AI Overviews citing at least one source outside the top 1095.7%97.0%
Average rank when the source is in the top 104.143.91

In plain terms: in the US, more than half of all citations come from pages that do not rank in the top 10, and 97.0% of AI Overviews cite at least one such source. Ranking still helps (when a cited source is in the top 10, it sits around rank 4 on average), but it is no longer the entry condition. Being cited by the AI is a distinct game from ranking, which is exactly what GEO is about.

The most cited domains:

United StatesCitationsFranceCitations
youtube.com1,385youtube.com1,343
reddit.com244service-public.gouv.fr119
nerdwallet.com124facebook.com103
investopedia.com113fr.wikipedia.org73
en.wikipedia.org79ameli.fr69
mayoclinic.org69economie.gouv.fr66

The pattern is identical on both sides of the Atlantic, with one local twist. Video dominates everything: YouTube is cited about ten times more than the second source in both markets. Then come authority sources: Reddit, NerdWallet, Investopedia and Mayo Clinic in the US; official government sites (service-public.gouv.fr, ameli.fr) in France, where Reddit has no foothold.

What this changes for your SEO (SMBs and SaaS)

If you run visibility for an SMB or a SaaS, here is the operational translation:

  1. Your rankings probably did not move, your traffic did. The AI Overview sits above the blue links on 83 to 87% of SERPs: at equal position, clicks get rarer. Watch CTR in Search Console, not just positions.
  2. Retire your featured snippet strategy. Position zero has effectively disappeared (0.5 to 2.1% on tracked queries). The replacement objective is being cited inside the AI Overview, which follows different structural triggers.
  3. Ranking is no longer enough, but staying visible is possible. With half of citations coming from outside the top 10, a well-structured page can be cited without ranking, and a page at position 3 can be ignored. Structure content for extraction: direct answers at the top of sections, sourced facts, clean markup.
  4. Build dense topical authority. Google cites sources that are references on a specific topic. A coherent, deep blog on your vertical outweighs scattered articles: that is the whole point of topical authority.
  5. Invest in video. YouTube is the number one AI Overview source in both markets, by an order of magnitude.
  6. Local businesses get a reprieve. 13 to 16% coverage only, with the local pack still central.

This is exactly the problem ForgR attacks: generating coherent thematic blogs optimized for both classic SEO and visibility in AI engines (Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini), with a dedicated GEO agent.

Key Takeaways

  • France flipped in 60 days: 0% AI Overviews in June, 92.0% in August on the same 200 queries (184 gained, 0 lost). Rollouts are binary.
  • Featured snippets are dead: 70.5% to 0.5% on tracked French queries; about 1% on both full samples.
  • France now sits at 83.0% AI Overview coverage versus 86.6% in the US: the gap closed in one summer.
  • Every editorial sector exceeds 82% in both markets, health leading at 97%; only local queries remain spared (13 to 16%).
  • 50.6% of domains cited by US AI Overviews (43.8% in France) are not in the organic top 10, and 97.0% of AI Overviews cite at least one source outside it: classic SEO alone no longer guarantees visibility.
  • Most cited sources: YouTube by far, then Reddit and financial or medical authorities in the US, official government sites in France.

FAQ

Did AI Overviews really launch in France? Yes. On 1,000 desktop queries measured on August 4, 2026, 83.0% show an AI Overview. On the 200 queries we had been tracking since June (0% back then), 92.0% now show one.

When exactly did the flip happen? Between our two measurements, June 16 and August 4, 2026, a window of roughly 60 days. The scale of the differential (184 gains, 0 losses) points to a single-wave rollout rather than a gradual test.

Is optimizing for featured snippets still worth it? Not as a priority. They fell from 70.5% to 0.5% on our tracked French queries and sit around 1% in both full samples. The strategic replacement is citation inside the AI Overview.

Is ranking in the top 10 enough to get cited? No. In the US, 50.6% of cited domains are absent from the query's organic top 10 (43.8% in France), and 97.0% of AI Overviews cite at least one source outside it. Content structure and topical authority make the difference.

What does the French flip predict for other markets? That the remaining holdouts should expect a fast, binary rollout: near-zero to near-total coverage within weeks, featured snippets absorbed, and citation patterns immediately matching the US model.

Sources and methodology

  • Sample: 2,000 real queries, 1,000 on Google France (desktop, French) and 1,000 on Google US (desktop, English), spread across 10 sectors (health, finance, SEO/marketing, e-commerce, legal, real estate, travel, tech, B2B SaaS, local) and classified by intent (informational, transactional, local, navigational) and query length.
  • Longitudinal: the 296 queries from the June 2026 barometer (200 FR, 96 US) were regenerated identically for a query-by-query differential.
  • Collection: August 4, 2026, DataForSEO API (Google SERP, desktop, depth 10). For each query: SERP elements (AI Overview, featured snippet, PAA, local pack, video, forums, shopping), sources cited by the AI Overview, and the organic top 10.
  • Limitations: desktop only (mobile may differ), a one-day snapshot (SERPs fluctuate), and a 1,000-query-per-country sample that does not claim to represent the whole web. All figures come directly from this measurement, without extrapolation.
  • First edition: AI Overviews barometer, June 2026.
